My Heel Cord Lengthening Surgery

So I recently had a surgery to lengthen my right heel cord so that I should soon be able to move my right foot more than I previously was (due to an accident a few years back). Just thought I’d share some pictures of the cast which is the first stage of a 2 month re-coop process.

Hopefully I get this cast off in a few weeks and get moved to a soft cast. I’m thinking it will be removable, allowing me to scratch the itches. 😛

Anyhoo, thats about it lately.

My daughter is getting ready to have her 3rd heel cord surgery in less than a week. She has right spastic hemiparesis CP. She’s 12. The first two was when she was 3 and 5 so she was significantly younger. Any words of advice for my pre-teen who is extremely nervous??

The surgery really wasn’t bad at all for me. They did a nerve block from the knee down, so the first 24 hours were pain free.

I guess my only bits of advice are to not worry about the surgery since its performed routinely these days, stock up on some of her favorite tv shows or movies and get a lot of rest.

The healing process for me went smoothly, but I think that the amount of rest I was able to get really improved things.

One last bit of advice, if she has a nerve block from the knee down, make sure she starts taking her pain medication before she goes to bed, even if her leg is still numb. I woke up in horrible pain the first night when the nerve block wore off, but after the first day and especially if you take medications on time then it shouldn’t be bad at all.

I hope that was helpful. Best of luck to you and your daughter! I hope she can stand casts better than I! 😀

Thank you so much for your reply. She just got braces on her teeth this week…and with the surgery NEXT WEEK…she’s having a rough March! I will let her read your reply. One last question…how is your leg since the surgery?

Its taken some time for me to really build the strength back in my ankle and it still gets sore quickly, but my range of motion is much improved. Its certainly better after the surgery than the way it was before.
